I just bought a 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport with an automatic transmission also has overdrive.?

When I am driving sometimes the shifts two or three times in quick secession. Other times it seems like the engine is reving til it goes in gear. I am used to a manual trans so I am not sure what to feel for. Is this normal or is my slipping?
