What's the title of this book?

The story starts out with a girl (teenage years) going to live with her aunts or something in what they've turned into a boarding house. In the yard there's a tree where you can tie wishes you've written on the branches. The only other things I can remember about the book is that the spanish flu epidemic swept through, and that the girl befriended a blind man who had been wounded in world war one.
