How safe is gastric byp surgery?

my wife had it. she had very few problems. she did lose a lot of weight fast but over time has gained it back. a friend of hers had the same procedure and has all kinds of problems. she got adhesion's that caused bowel obstructions which is a medical emergency and can cause death. she also developed a very big problem with the pain medication she was on. she had different problems that keep her on the medication and she developed an addition. from my experience it is hit or miss do a lot of history and back ground on the doctor and hospital if you decide to have it. my wife had an open procedure the friend who had all the problems had it laproscopicly so do not let some one tell you one is safer than the other they both have very real risk
